Slim, Babe, Tonya, Dead Swans, and SlimFic
First of all, thank you for reading! Second of all, thank you for the feedback.
A few of you have asked who the heck is talking in these posts:) This, my friends and readers —all four of you—is a completely fair question. So here’s the poop. I’m trying to figure out the best voice I want to write and you want to read to promote my debut novel, Slim and The Notorious Mrs. Churchill, coming out this fall. First, I started with an excerpt from the book in Babe’s voice and quickly realized that if I excerpted the whole novel here, there would be a least four people who would not buy it—you know who you are.
So, with a little experimentation and some time away, I went back to the voice in my head, Fictitious Slim. This week, I have been writing from her perspective. The stuff FicSlim writes about has some grounding in fact, and a lot of grounding in fiction. Fake news, some may say. She is definitely not the real Slim but a cheeky mash-up of the real Slim’s voice distilled from her book, Slim Keith, A Rich, Imperfect Life, co-written with Annette Tapert, through my brain and mixed with 100 proof vodka over ice and set aflame.
I love this voice, and while she is not real, she is real to me and has been since I was first introduced to the idea of her in 1998. Yes, the psychosis runs deep in this one. I was working as a Beauty Editor at a Canadian Woman’s magazine, and someone said to me that I reminded them of Slim Keith. Now, full disclosure, that someone was a public relations hack from Calvin Klein who was trying to get me to cover the latest Klein fragrance (maybe CK One) in the December gift-buying guide. As it turns out, flattery works —it was also a cool fragrance—and the comment started me down the Capote Swan rabbit hole, and I have been ruminating around here ever since (such is the vanity of a 29-year-old).
So I am going to continue on with this voice for a bit because I am having fun with her. Please take everything she says with a grain of salt. She is not only a fake and a liar but also completely unfact-checked.
Love the four of you so much!
xoxo,
Tonya
Slim with the love of her life, Leland Hayward before he done her wrong.

Sounds like a good plan Slim! 😉
Love you way of using subscribers to give feed back as you develop a story. I publish REALTY REALITY each week (a 500+ word article on stuff related to investment real estate). I have a 150+ constant contact group which gets the article first (on a weds); ALWAYS get comments from 2 - 5. I edit, and post on following Monday on LInkedin (going to 3000+ folks). Great “fail safe”. Hope life is treating you well.
